Calculus I Workshop Series

Summer Workshop Series is a 4-day event that will give students entering MATH 2413 or 2417 a precalculus review and an introduction to limits. The workshops will consist of lectures and problem-solving activities. Students can choose which sessions they would like to attend. Sessions include:

  • Precalculus Refresher Day 1 (1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 14): Topics covered will be: polynomial, rational, and algebraic functions; exponential and logarithmic functions. We will review the important properties of these types of functions, and students will practice working with them, including doing things such as solving equations involving these functions and finding characteristics like the domain and asymptotes of such functions.
  • Precalculus Refresher Day 2 (1 to 3 p.m. on Aug 15th): Topics covered will be: exponential and logarithmic functions (cont.) and trigonometric functions. We will finish reviewing exponential and logarithmic functions and then spend the rest of the time reviewing trigonometry. Similar to Day 1, students will practice working with these types of functions, including doing things such as applying logarithmic properties and trig identities to solve problems.
  • Introduction to Limits (1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 16): Students will be introduced to the notion of limits in Calculus. We will illustrate the different types of limits through graphs, discuss indeterminate forms, and work through numerous examples. Students will practice evaluating different types of limits with various techniques.
  • Continuation of Limits (1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 17): We will continue the discussion on limits, working through more examples which will require more advanced techniques to solve. We will conclude by introducing the notion of derivatives in Calculus, and students will practice using limits to find the derivative of a function.

This workshop series will be conducted virtually.

Physics I Workshop Series

Physics, the study of the natural world in terms of matter and energy. The Physics Summer Workshop series is a 3-day event to prepare students entering PHYS 1301 or PHYS 2325. Introducing core mathematical and physical concepts will give the student the confidence and background they need to tackle the course. The workshops will consist of lectures and problem-solving activities. Students can choose which sessions they would like to attend when registering. Sessions include:

Vectors (10 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 14): Topics include mathematical operations including vectors.

Describing Motion (10 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 15): Topics include discussing position, velocity, and acceleration.

The Causes of Motion (10 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 16): Topics include Newton’s Laws of Motion, tension, and friction.

This workshop series will be conducted virtually.

General Chemistry I Workshop Series

The General Chemistry I Summer Workshop is intended to address topics that students will need to be familiar with before entering CHEM 1311. This workshop facilitated by Dr. Amandeep Sra, is a great way to refresh chemistry skills or get a head start for the upcoming semester. It is a cognitively rich program combining mini-lectures and collaborative group activities with a focus on teaching students independent learning skills. Topics include:

  • Math Spotlight: Significant figures and Dimensional analysis
  • What’s in a name? Chemical nomenclature

Eligibility: Students that have not taken AP chemistry high school course or have not had a Chemistry course in the past 2-5 years will benefit from participating in this workshop.

Dates:
Aug. 10 – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Virtual)
August 18 – 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Virtual)

NOTE: When registering, please select only one workshop date.  The workshop content covered will be repeated for both dates. This workshop series will be conducted virtually.

Organic Chemistry I Workshop Series

The 2023  Organic Chemistry Summer Workshop is an intensive, two-day workshop taught by Dr. Pathum Panapitiya, Dr. Daniel Tran and Dr. Sumudu Wijenayake. The camp is designed to provide a primer for the Introductory Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 2323) course. The materials for the organic chemistry workshop include three portions. Each portion contains a lecture, written summary of concepts, and problems.  Students can choose which sessions they would like to attend when registering.

The student participants will work with student leaders on solving problems.

Concepts covered in the organic chemistry summer workshop are:

Session 1: Draw line-angle formulas and Lewis structures for organic compounds  (1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 25)

Session 2: Determine hybridization (10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 26)

Session 3: Draw Resonance structures and calculate formal charges for organic compounds  (1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 26)

This workshop is intended for students who have completed both General Chemistry I & General Chemistry II and plan to enroll in Organic Chemistry I for the Fall 2023 semester.

This workshop series will be conducted in-person.
