Student Leader Roles

CommLab Peer Leaders

CommLab Peer Leaders provide students with access to practical feedback and resources for improving oral and group presentations. Leaders offer their own expertise to other students who need help with their individual or group presentations.

CommLab Peer Leaders:

  • Assist students with crafting and/or revising thesis statements
  • Assist students in organizing speech outlines
  • Assist with group speeches and presentation rehearsals
  • Video record and review speeches for self critique
  • Assist with academic citation (oral and written)
Marketing & Graphic Design Leader

The marketing team works to create collateral materials that advertise SSC events and programs. Team members also contribute to social media and campus outreach efforts.

  • Create eye-catching flyers and posters for SSC events and programs
  • Work with the SSC team to design and execute shirt designs
  • Collaborate with other marketing team members to share ideas and feedback
  • Proficiency in Adobe suite is required
  • Photography, social media experience, and video editing is a plus!
Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutor Leaders host sessions each week throughout the semester and meet one-on-one or in small groups with students who need assistance with coursework. Leaders help students understand topics in a variety of Math, Science, and Engineering courses. Tutoring sessions are designed to meet students’ individual questions and needs, but the tutors do not provide direct answers for homework, quizzes, or exams. Applicants must have an A- or higher in the course(s) interested in and a minimum GPA of a 3.0.

Responsibilities:

  • Help students develop self-confidence and improve study skills.
  • Hold drop-in office hours or appointments for a minimum of six hours per week throughout the semester.
  • Attend weekly and monthly tutor training sessions and communicate with faculty as needed.
  • Attend training before the start of the semester.

Application Process:

  • Submit application with updated resume and transcript
  • Candidate Exam based on content area
  • In Person Interview and Mock Tutoring session

Peer-Led Team Learning Leaders

Peer-Led Team Learning is a nationally recognized mean of engaging students especially in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Students who participate in PLTL not only reap the benefits of higher engagement with, and application of, course material, but also connect socially with peer leaders who have prior knowledge, experience, and success in a course.

Leader Responsibilities:

  • Conduct two weekly 80-minute collaborative sessions at the Student Success Center (SSC)
  • Attend the weekly peer leader/liaison meeting
  • Prepare for weekly sessions accordingly using a planning guide and communicate with students via email outside of session times when necessary
  • Maintain attendance records for each section you lead
  • Attend mandatory training sessions

Eligibility:

  • Taken the PLTL-supported course at UTD
  • Received an A- or higher
  • Cumulative GPA greater than or equal to a 3.00

Supplemental Instruction Leaders

Supplemental Instruction is a series of weekly peer-led study sessions for students taking historically difficult courses. SI is for all students who want to improve both their understanding of course material and their grades. SI sessions are facilitated by a trained SI leader who has previously excelled in the targeted course. SI leaders attend the lectures and take notes just as the enrolled students do.

SI Leaders:

  • Plan and facilitate two 75-minute or three 50-minute interactive study sessions per week
  • Attend weekly team meetings and communicate with their SI faculty member
  • Attend training before the start of the semester
  • Creatively promote and market their SI sessions to students

Writing Center Peer Leaders

Writing Center Peer Leaders provide writing support to students in one-on-one sessions. Tutoring sessions are designed to provide constructive feedback and assist students with idea generation, drafting and revising papers, and documenting sources. Peer Leaders strive to give the student the tools necessary to excel in their writing projects.

Requirements for Writing Center Peer Leaders:

  • Firm grasp of English grammar, mechanics, and usage.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the elements of academic writing, including knowledge of rhetorical principles and research strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
